Quick history lesson: the Aztecs had a developed ontological system before the Spaniards set foot in their land. The higher the being on the ladder, the more "alive" it is. The various bloody sacrifices condemned by the conquistadors were literally just rituals to allow the sacrificed victims to step upwards on the ladder of existence, the rituals which survived are also aimed at ensouling lifeless objects.
