I've seen so much variation within one single personality type that I question the validity of the MBTI system as a whole. I don't know much about psychology so I can't say how scientific it is, but I guess it has at least some virtue based on the fact that it gives you a rough outline of your personality based on questions that you respond in the first place. But I don't know how proper it is to classify people into 16 categories.
Not to mention it gets treated very much like a "scientific astrology" by most people, though I guess criticizing the attitudes of the followers of that doctrine instead of the doctrine per se is fallacious.
