He was an Italian Marxist who later became a fascist and advised Mussolini during the Italian social republic. He genuinely believed that fascism would lead to the workers state and that the USSR had degenerated into a state capitalistic dictatorship of the bureaucrats. He ended up getting hanged by his own comrades with Mussolini in 1945. It's actually a sad story.
