I don't think he would have been able to spend as much as he did on tts if he was actually in a dire financial situaiton.He only sent like 5 TTS total and only in moments when Tay was having a really bad time. The first one he sent was in the kitchen and she instantly knew it was him and told him not to spend any more money on TTS. I don't think she is lying about the financial situation for her family both growing up and now, her habits of hating subscription services like Spotify, Netflix, and Hulu and refusal to buy video games, instead torrenting them is a pretty good confirmation she wasn't lying.
