Wtf are Ukrainians? I've been looking into the history of Ukraine and can't figure out where the fuck they came from, or how they ended up with a large population of over 41 million.
Let me give a run down:
>original slavs in Ukraine were basically just an east slavic people, who were associated with Rus
>after the fall of Rus, Poles became dominant in the region, polonizing a lot of them (with some exceptions - being the modern day Ruthenians, a small minority group in Ukraine and around Carpathia)
>fast forward to the mid 1600's, just before the Deluge, and the cossacks (who are basically a wandering federation of a bunch of different shit) revolt against Poland
>the cossacks win, breaking away most of Ukraine from Polish influence, but end up killing off almost all of the Ukraine territory, either through direct slaughter, famine, or disease
>from here, Ukraine is mostly known through the cossacks, but they were just wandering horse fuckers on the Wild Steppes, and could not be the progenitors of 41,000,000 Ukrainians
So, who the fuck are the Ukrainians?
