The thing with mercury is you can make it spin in a pipe, add voltage... i know its hard to visualize magnetic field motion but imagine something like this. Blue is a pipe, yellow the magnetic field generated by the moving mercury on the pipe, red is the moving mercury itself and the teal is the magnetic field generated by the voltage added to the mercury. The magic happens where red yellow and teal meet.
