▶What is the Gospel?
The gospel – or the good news – is the pure and simple promise that God made with mankind over two thousand years ago: All who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved.
Many years ago, the Son of God came in the flesh and lived as a man with one purpose in mind: to do the will of the Father.
After a time of miracles, healing, teaching, rebuking and guiding many people, Jesus was sitting in the house of Simon the leper with His disciples and a woman approached Him. She had with her very precious ointment and poured it onto His head. This good work was done for His burial that was soon to come. To that end, He delivered Himself to the cross.
Saint John in John 3:16-17 says:
>For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. For you see, no man could live under the law of God. Indeed, every man broke that law and fell into the stranglehold of sin with the rest of the world. The wages of such transgressions were and always will be death.
And so, our Lord Jesus Christ lived the sinless life that we could not. He overcame all temptation and became the sacrifice – the Lamb – for our sins. He suffered excruciating pain and died upon that cross; His holy blood poured out. Not only was He nailed to that cross but so were our sins. His sacrifice; His blood, washes us clean and atones us before God. If we believe.
In times past man has sacrificed for God but, in the end, it would be God Whom sacrificed for mankind. He truly has loved us before we loved Him. All glory to His name!
