One thing I would suggest is don't make her work outside the house. If she wants to work get her her own business or let her work for you. My wife and mother-in-law both work at my business.
You also have to keep them entertained, like children. If she is a stay at home mom, get her something to do, a garden, charity work, church, something productive and outside the house. One thing that really makes them happy is little acts of kindness. If you see something they like try to get it and surprise them with it. It doesn't have to be anything big or expensive.
Final piece of advice, don't take any shit from her, but don't give her any either.
