It was Joseph Smith's attempt to divulge the secrets of Freemasonry and our lost history, in a way that was digestible to the public.
So yes, while it is true, that white people had visited America prior, and the story laid out in the Mormon bible is closer than the default story that is given in schools, it is still not meant to be taken literally.
That being said, much of the general historical events it outlines did occur in one way or another.
