If I take a job I currently have an offer for, where I will be traveling doing maintenance at many mines, mostly coal mines but some gold and limestone and others, then I will occasionally work in some mines with coal this low. In those mines, they only cut the seam, not an extra foot or two of rock above the seam to give the miners and machinery more space. This is more economically efficient.
The mine height can be two or three feet high at these particular mines, so I will look rather like this fine fellow.
