The evolutionist position is entirely coherent. You got a human species capable of self-contemplation and higher-order reasoning as the result of specific evolutionary pressures and adaptations. It is you who is making the non-sequitur, you haven't given a reason why evolution shouldn't be able to develop intelligence and higher-order reasoning (a side-effect of which might be self-contemplation) when these things present an evolutionary advantage. You seem to be operating under the assumption that the development of rational beings "had to happen", which just isn't the case. Evolution provides the "why" of how it did happen, but it doesn't treat the development of intelligent species as pre-ordained.
