They chose the štokavian dialect precisely because it was also spoken by serbs whith whom they wanted to unify. Before this our languages varied vastly compared to today.
This so called illyrian movement has laid the groundwork for both yugoslav states and has proven to have been a great detriment to croatia. It was misled to say the least.
