I am of the conviction that before the "valley" men would simultaneously climb the mountain up while others were descending. Whether men descended or ascended was decided by the respective spheres. If a man were to reach heaven, it would ultimately mean that another had to reach hell.
The valley is literally there to make sure that you don't get fucked up by what is essentially hell.
In that sense this is the new "hell" but certainly not THE hell.
