If this was any other place, I would probably let people think that OP's pic is what Germany looks like. I don't want any more people to come to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.
Some of you are based, though, so I thought I show what Germany actually tends to be like.
Germans have a strong garderning culture. Compared to Americans, we don't go out as much to restaurants. We tend to cook at home and take care of our gardens or houses. It is part of the concept of "Gemütlichkeit" (comfy). You have similar trends in the art and cultural movements of "Biedermeier" and "Gründerzeit" during which home life was focused, particularly because of the expansion of the middle class and their accumulation of wealth. Buildings from that time period are some of my favorite, besides many of the traditional half-timbered houses ("Fachwerkhaus") you can see in many German towns.
