It was basically a propaganda move for the Cold War, the only reason the Soviets didn't say anything is because it probably even fooled them for a few years and maybe they had a deal not to unveil the truth in exchange for Americans not unveiling others things, like what truly happened in WW2 in all the camps occupied by the Soviets.
