well i never make sweets and generally the closest my family makes are cookies and brownies. i'm sure it's around, i've just never had reason to bother with it
i think french toast is seen like most other "breakfast" foods here in that they're borderline desserts that have been culturally decided upon as ok to eat only at 8 am
the way i learned to make it was mixing up the eggs, putting a small splash of milk and a healthy dose of cinnamon in that mixture, soaking the bread in that a bit, then putting that bread into a lightly buttered pan. i never felt that the cinnamon was particularly integral but if i weren't going to use it then i'd feel like i have to include something like maple syrup or powdered sugar for it not to be too bland.
i suppose it is worth mentioning that it's usually cinnamon sugar that we use, not straight cinnamon
