The real reason is that the idea of the state being a force for "good" as opposed to just an apparatus to tax and steal people's money came from Socrates and Plato.
That idea that their exists some universal "good" and that the state somehow can serve that purpose influence early Christianity quite heavily, which is why st.augustine wrote city of God (the Roman empire is ok because it exists to spread Christianity to "pagans").
Most non abrhamic non Jewish mind slaves usually believed that the gods were not looking out for humanity. Most obviously because we all die and lose all our loved ones without knowing what comes after. The illiad and epic of gilgamesh touch on that theme quite heavily, along with other things.
The Bible amounts to "do what your Jewish overlords tell you and you go to heaven". Even for its time it was a completely corrupt morally bankrupt joke of a book. Compare the Bible to the epic of gilgamesh and you'll realize the Bible lacks real depth since it's main purpose is mind control and not expressing anything deep or meaningful about our Short time on earth .
