Something to the tune of tens of thousands of tons of garbage was removed from the streets themselves, along with thousands....yes that's right, thousands of horse corpses.
You see, back then if your horse died in a city, it was cheaper to simply bail out and leave the horse. So much garbage was dumped in the streets by everyone that a horse corpse was just a small increase in the amount of rotting, rat infested biomass fermenting on the same road you walked down.
Eventually, people globally started getting sick of this and the modern concept of waste management came about, to the point where someone littering is looked at like a fiend. And rightly so, after all, we don't want thousands of rotting horse carcasses in our streets again.
Sometimes, you should beat a dead horse, or at least get it out of the street.
