Science and medicine have long been regarded as the keys to unlocking the mysteries of the universe, the means by which we can improve our lives and advance our understanding of the world around us. However, as we continue to push the boundaries of scientific experimentation and innovation, we must also be mindful of the potential dangers that come with such pursuits.
This is a lesson that is brilliantly illustrated in the video game Bloodborne. In this game, we are introduced to the people of Yharnam, a city that has fallen victim to a mysterious illness that has spread like wildfire through its streets. Desperate for a cure, the people of Yharnam turn to science and medicine, only to find themselves ensnared by something far more sinister.
The people of Yharnam are injected with a poison that they believe will cure their illness, but in reality, they are being led astray by those in positions of authority who are driven by their thirst for knowledge and discovery (Lawrence). They are willing to sacrifice anything - even the lives of innocent people - to achieve their goals.
My dear friends, what deeply troubles me is the eerie resemblance between the cautionary tale of Bloodborne and the current state of scientific experimentation in our world. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a frantic rush to develop vaccines and treatments, with some willing to compromise ethics and human dignity for the sake of profit. We cannot afford to forget the teachings of Bloodborne, lest we find ourselves repeating the same mistakes over and over again. We must remain vigilant against those who would sacrifice everything, including human lives, in the pursuit of knowledge and progress. We must ensure that responsible scientific exploration and development always prioritize the well-being of humanity. Let us learn from the lessons of the past and create a better future, one where science and medicine are truly in service to humanity, and not the other way around.
