Our 'spirits' in human form are the fallen angels. Fallen angels cursed into the human bodies bedeviled by...well, the devil through the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
This is why we are supposed to believe in Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life.
We fell with Lucifer to become gods, as it is written in scripture; we rise with Jesus Christ to become one with God, as it is written in scripture.
In other words, Lucifer did exactly as he said he would do with God's Help.
