People treated it like it was separate from the real world rather than an extension of it. In all honesty, I think the Internet kept a lot of people from going absolutely insane.
Online gaming was cool, but expensive pre-broadband. There were a lot of games that you had to know someone's phone number so that your computer could call them to play. We also had this thing called long distance, which meant that if someone was outside of your local calling area then the price was astronomical. Imagine an hour+ long game of Warcraft2 at even $1.99/minute. There were actual lists of people's real names and numbers on websites so you could call them (a stranger) and say "Hey, is XX there? Oh, cool, I want to play WC2. Boot it up so I can connect."
It was a better place. The world was a better place. I miss those days.
