Koko the gorilla didn't actually understand language, she only understood that a certain type of sound or hand sign could give her what she wanted, it often being sometging hedonistic. I think primates in general work like this: they are driven by primitive hedonism and if acting like a human gives them something that feels good, like banana or something like that, they can display human like behavior.
