Back in the what? 60-90s japan had a shitload of money so they just made anime as more of an artform which also didn't have all the rules as todays society(gore and the like)
Today its more of an advertisement for the manga/vn/toys/ and making money off of it.
Try out some old anime ovas its really cool how they experimented with it. There is a reason people like it.
