a lot of it is unironically nostalgia given that stuff like mario 64, ocarina of time, and banjo kazooie are things that a ton of people played and loved as kids.
i think the thing people appreciate most now, especially on /v/, is the "if it's not fun why bother" meme. there tends to be very little that gets in the way of gameplay for most of the games. you just sorta boot it up, maybe watch an introductory cutscene, then start gaming until you beat it.
