This is why the Free trade agreement betweeen the US and Europe failed. Because American companies demanded from us to drastically lower our food standards. Not because our politicians are so ethical, but people here are generally squeamish, due to recuring food scandals.
Airplane food (I heard Americans for some reason getting laughing fits when hearing these two words in that combination, which is something I don't get, but I'm actually serious) is generally considered a testing ground. If people stop complaining about it, it's a sign they can unleash this sort of (constantly lowering) quality to the wider public. And the public is not ready for American food (but we are getting there some time)
