All it takes is one over-eager security guard hurting the wrong person and suddenly the company has a multi-million dollar lawsuit on their hands. That's a much bigger loss than a few hundred dollars of stolen goods. Loss prevention's job is more deterrence than anything. Most people won't steal if they know they're being watched. It's all a mind game. Plus, all that product is insured. As long as we make a token effort to deter theft, the company gets its money back.
