I believe they were microwaves and microwaves are reactive to steel and metal differently than they are plastics. Hence you see the cars up close with the interiors perfectly fine but the outside sheetmetal is melted.
Great example is the fire engine, that is melted down, but has a 5 gallon plastic bucket in the back seat that looks brand new.
