>>20561149computers were a lot worse back then, everything was shit slow and windows 95 would crash once an hour for no reason, even windows xp was kind of flaky. linux was more stable but you needed to be a scientist to install and maintain it and the user experience was even worse than it is now. apple macs were uncommon
internet connections were also very slow so physical media was much more important. you would buy computer games in person or place an order by phone, play them offline then discuss them online
when Skype came out in 2006 I remember thinking 'holy shit we can have international telephone calls for FREE!' before that it was mostly text chat, digital cameras were still quite new so it wasn't common to take and send pictures
internet websites tended to be:
- news and email (yahoo, msn)
- computer games news (gamespy)
- flash games and/or animations (newgrounds, ebaumsworld)
- personal home pages and fan sites (geocities or academic home pages hosted by universities)
- weird experiments (mostly joke websites with animated gifs, audio or javascript)
- shock sites, porn, conspiracy theories and other shit you browsed when nobody else was home
