Doesn't matter how good you are, if your stuff isn't in line with contemporary trends, it's never going to do well. Countless good artwork, music, and writing just flies under the radar because it's not what's "in."
That, and many artists suck at self marketing. Nothing to be ashamed of - it's fairly common for those of us who spend so much time on art, we're totally retarded everywhere else.
