I'm working on horticulture and botany study at the moment and everything is in theory at the moment because there's snow on the ground but I plan to implement a produce garden this season.
Since I live in zone 3-5 we have the most severe winter temps (sub zero including double digits)
I'm researching hardy vegetable varieties that can withstand lack of light or water and cold temps.
Basically the majority of root plants like beets, turnips, carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic.
Also the leaf varieties like Spinachs and Mache can survive where iceberg lettuce or romaine would perish.
I plan to expand and possibly even hybridize or selectively breed certain kinds.
Maybe advance into fruits too like kiwi or clemantines which fair well in cold climates.
Possibly even dwarf bananas.
I don't plan on using green houses or heating in any way.
No artificial fertilizers or sprays all 100% natural.
A proper garden and a local butcher (or possibly game hunters) will provide all of the required nurishment for my family which reduces financial strain and also freshness/quality of the product.
Plus it reduces disease via transport and importing from other regions since it's all local.
