>>11523770maybe i just never got to that point.
oh i thought you meant the phonetic bit was unfortunate. this makes much more sense.
i'm hoping that upper level classes are better about this sort of thing. i imagine that smaller class sizes, more a larger knowledge base, and less stupid freshmen lead to much conversation in japanese. similarly i think that stuff probably means people aren't being bombarded by a ton of topics at once which makes it easier for professors to be nitpicky about basics, especially if you've told them you're specifically trying to improve X or Y so they know to tell you when you're off base even if it's not that bad.
i haven't decided how much i'll try to hone my accent anyway. at the end of the day the bar is very low if the goal is to be understandable and i don't think i'm the type to make the lifetime commitment that is trying to sound like a native. all i know is that any steps i make in the right direction now will get multiplied down the line since it's hard to unlearn bad habits, so it doesn't hurt to dedicate a bit of time to pronunciation
still need to look into pitch accent before too long
>>11523815at this point i think the group just needs to be taken out back anyway. it's just too sad to watch at this point
>>11523824yes ofc. based dogen always jokes that kanj is getting less necessary over time because everyone just uses english words instead anyway since they're cool.
well kanj is originally chinese ofc but without context it can be interpreted as jap or simplified chi no? like u could also write 中国 and say it's japanese for china.
if someone is getting the word 日本 tattoo'd on their body obviously it's because japan is important to them in some way so it subverts the expectation by referring to it as chinese text even though it's both in practical terms.
the fact that it's true but an unexpected interpretation is what makes it funny
