No, it portrays them badly because the story is taught in perspective of tribes living in the roman frontier and their lands being encroached upon by roman authority. If a bunch of foreigners came, demanded tribute and most of your livelihood, and more in exchange just to keep your freedom, I think you wouldnt be fond of rome either.
