The thing is, when sin first tainted humanity, Adam wept and started suffering the fault of the corruption of his fall. He experimented with death. The infinite joy of the garden, was no more. His son was killed, the other became a murderer. He wept with all his soul, in the sight of what he had made.
Jesus, the son of God, felt for humanity. He saw the misery, the pain, the suffering that awaited us all. And he decided to give himself as a sacrifice, so we could be saved from the reigns of sin and death. Thats why he allowed himself to be put on a cross, literally, for love and compassion for the suffering. Thats why he went to the prostitutes, the tax collectors, the bums and the drunkards. He was trying to save the miserable and the people most affected by sin.
If only you would experiment Christ teachings, even if you didn't came to believe in God, you would still be glad for Christ sacrifice, because you walked on a path of pure light and meaning, you would be glad for him in every way possible.
