1/4th to 1/5th of Japan was Catholic a few generations after their interaction with Portugal. The Jesuits ran Portugal back then and converted many Japanese, some would go to Rome. Fast-forward and they close the country again and the Government has most Japanese Christians executed. Possibly paid to do so by the anti-Jesuit faction running the Vatican? Thus, the Jesuits wouldn't have an outside homebase. Like they had in places like Paraguay.
This just so happened as a consequence of the Wars the Vatican was having with itself. It happened again in the 1860s in the War of the Triple Alliance. Paraguay was killed off almost entirely. 90% of the population mass killed.
These guys are straight up magicians.
Exhumimg the body of the old, now dead Pope that killed off Japan. As well as retribution for an earlier failed attempt in Paraguay.
They pulled that dudes body out of the crypt. Pulled his soul from Heaven, excommunicated him and damned him to Hell and destroying the body. Yes this really happened.
Do the research. That earlier attempt before the 1860s in Paraguay resulted in the mass cutting off the Jesuits by order of the Portuguese/Spanish. So they burned out missions and reclassified the natives to Slavery or killed them. There was a DeNiro movie about it.
