I think collective consciousness is a result of the spirits waiting to reincarnate (ie. in Hel or in the halls of the Asir and Vanir - Hades, Elysium, etc.). They are bound to form hierarchies there too, and so they may attempt to influence their living kinsmen with some sort of organized effort. This would inherently be tribal and racial. Once you decrypt that "elf" means "white" and refers to these ancestral spirits, a lot of the knowledge of the spirit-world becomes more apparent. It takes a lot of reading and translating and etymological studies, which may or may not be worth it depending on your level of interest.
I will always recommend focusing on the living animal parts. Live healthily, break addictions, marry a cooperating woman, raise strong boys and obedient daughters, teach them their heritage, marry them off well, and so on. Never give to strangers what can be given to kin. Learn practical skills, teach practical skills, go outside, look at the sunset, bang your woman on the mountaintop, and become a man that as many of your ancestors as possible would recognize. Then they might be better able to pay attention to you and guide you on your path. If the ancestral spirits can't see or reach you, they cannot help.
In my case, there have been Scandinavians as a semi-distinct entity from Germanics for at least 12.000 years. About a thousand of those were predominantly Christian. Going only patrilineally, I could easily fit all my forefathers who were (nominally, since there is no living memory of Christian faith) Christian and Scandinavian in a single room. If I fit all of my patrillineal Scandinavian forefathers into an auditorium, the (nominally) Christians would be naught but a single row of seats. Still, I honor them as well - they are men of their time like all the others.
