At least on some level, because there's so many anecdotes of it happening with e.g. DNA tests coupled with the fact that we all speak English and English surnames are the most common.

The least Anglo areas are probably the upper midwest and ironically much of the northeast like Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey--all the places impacted by immigration waves the most. Americans moved continually westward overtime so there's lots on the west coast and the states leading up there.
