So basically, the entire Roman Empire was torn apart into a collection of Germanic kingdoms. Then the Byzantine Empire tried to reconquer Italy. Although they were unsuccessful, they managed to damage the power of the Ostrogoths. However, the Lombards, who migrated from Denmark down to modern-day Hungary, saw the power vacuum, and moved into Northern Italy. Where they lived for hundreds of years, until the Frankish Empire grew so big they were conquered.
But basically the Germanic people (aryans) were completely tearing the Roman Empire apart. After being pushed into (or settled into) Roman lands, they overpowered and outmastered the Romans. They were even rising through the ranks of nobility and becoming top generals, advisers, and senators within Rome.
