Pergamum was famous for its temples the most prominent of which was the Temple of Zeus dedicated to Aesculapius, the serpent god of healing. The cultic worship of Aesculapius incorporated snakes and healing rituals. A giant living serpent was kept within the precincts of the temple as an object of worship.
The Book of Revelation refers to Pergamum as the location of Satan’s throne. "I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth (Rev. 2:13"."
"Satan's Throne" was dismantled in Turkey piece by piece and transferred to Berlin, Germany. The first "Pergamon Museum" was built between 1897 and 1899 by Fritz Wolff and opened in 1901 but was not completed until 1930.
