It is possible that European people believed in pagan gods in the sense of animism, at least some of them (maybe not Hellenics, but Slavic Rodnovers, for example? I don't know, just guessing). The issue is - it doesn't have to be kept like that.
This is the core of "LARP" accusation: that contemporary pagans do not think of pagan gods as people 2000 years ago, which for the accusers is an argument against genuineness of contemporary pagan faith.
