They hoped to detect the motion of the Earth through space by sending beams of light in the direction of the earth’s rotation, and against it, and determine the motion based on when they each arrived back at the source.
They arrived back at the source at the exact same time, showing no movement. Saint Einstein solved this problem with all of the absurd contradictions of his theory of Relativity… only problem is that the experiment with two beams of light works when performed on a turntable (Sagnac effect) proving that the experiment wasn’t flawed, time doesn’t flow at different rates or any of that bullshit… the earth just isn’t moving.
