Paul introduced the doctrine of converting gentiles after a while, but to begin with it was a jewish sect that sought the overthrow of "idolatry" culture (that meant the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, etc) according to talmudic laws. There are now two main lines of jewish sects in the world: the rabbinic line (what everyone normally thinks of as jews) and the christian jewish sect (who recruit goyim/gentiles as followers and foot soldiers). Islam is also heavily talmudic, so you could argue that islam is a talmudic sect too.
