is the class division today much worse than it was in medieval times?

most estimates put the nobility as being roughly 5% of the medieval population, which i assumes not only people with titles, but also the family in their households
they needed to have enough income to defend their territory, manage towns and cities, build castles, invest, give taxes to the government, etc.
today, only 1.5%~ of US households make over 500k a year, which is enough to be making more than most of the upper incomes of the general population (doctors, engineers, ceos, etc.)
our "democracy" also only employs 1.9% of the population, most of which are low ranking military, government workers, and alphabet agents, but the actual politicians would be easily less than .1%
so, how is a class division where low estimates at 5% of the population being involved in politics somehow smaller than in historic societies?
