So you can't "work" yourself to be good enough for God. But: When you accept that there is objective Truth and it is simply the right/good to tell the truth, then you can become an agent of truth. So that's the faith part, accepting objective truth and its implications.
Alright, so you continue to live and to act. So when you make statements now, you can choose between telling the truth and lying. Whenever you lie, you separate yourself from the Truth. You can directly against it, turning away. This is called "mortal sin" and you need to go to confession to become an agent of truth again. That's the "work" part.
