Assuming, as many do, that they are about 30 miles in size and about 3000 miles above the surface, they change size so fractionally during the day as we observe them, that they cannot possibly be getting closer to us or farther away as on a FE map. And at sun/moon set/rise, they don't grow larger or shrink away, as would be seen if that was the reason for them disappearing from view.
