first once a queue forms then it's common sense that people will start afking in them and be reluctant to log out if they actually do get in which only exacerbates the problem
maybe more importantly mmos in particular only retain a fraction of the player base they have at launch since most people just try them out then quit within a month. this ends up meaning that spending the time and money to support the stress of launch is a huge waste since it'll sort itself out and nobody will ever see another queue after a week or two
