subnautica does have a storyline that comes to an end. i'd say it's one of those games where you're heavily encouraged to get sidetracked, muck around exploring random shit, build useless bases, etc. but even if you do blitz straight through it's quite solid. there's a subnautica 2 in early access actually and it's been getting a ton of flak because the story sucks ass compared to the first.
elite dangerous definitely is those things but i enjoyed it quite a bit despite it being barren and we've already discussed a few times that grindiness can be an upside for me in certain situations. if i'm right about how the OVR toolkit works it's possible i could do stuff like set up a virtual monitor to watch youtube on while i cruise around grinding which would actually be the comfiest thing i had ever experienced. unfortunately i can't think of any other more engaging spess games with VR support since they're all just "eve with good graphics or better combat"
