I have only ever owned manuals. When I've had to drive a rental car which is auto I truly loathe it. The lack of control is irritating. You can't downshift preemptively so when you want to accelerate you need to wait for the shift controller to deign to give you a lower gear then complete its shift then allow you to speed up. Bleh. For a few months I had a two hour commute each way in bumper to bumper traffic and my leg would get tired from riding the clutch, but honestly I've never wanted an auto. I ride motorcycles all summer anyway- old bikes without quick shifters. The fact is to 98% of people on the road all they want is a comfy couch to sit on that whisks them to their destination with as little asked of them as possible. Driving for them is simply a chore like washing dishes. If it can be completed by a machine it's a relief.
