The thing is: Most Americans couldn't get a row house if they wanted to. Their retarded zoning laws make middle housing illegal. So anyone who can't afford a fully detached house or doesn't want to live in the suburbs, it's off to the tower blocks for them. In Europe you have the freedom to have the option. Row houses or semi-detached houses are significantly cheaper (in maintenance as well) than a fully-detached while still offering most of the benefits compared to an apartment.

So the free market shows many Americans actually do want middle housing, but their government makes it illegal to build new ones. So they just badmouth anything that isn't fully-detached because sour grapes.
