>>12255297In the 20s and 30s mainline Protestants (Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, UCC, Quakers...) in the US had a series of theological civil wars between camps that were called the modernists and fundamentalists. Modernists wanted to attempt to reconcile Christianity with modernity, i.e. the conditions of the modern world that made it counter productive to abide by a strict view of the faith. E.g. the genealogy of man. Fundamentalists wanted to reject to modernity insofar as possible and keep a strict interpretation of scripture.
The modernists won in the big east coast establishments and the fundies were largely kicked out into the rural areas. Today, the modernists have become atheists who keep up a veneer of a Christianity spirit lacking any substance (as the fundies said they would), and Fundies are largely doomsday cults in the middle of the country who care only about building a temple in Jerusalem so Christ will return and destroy this world. Welcome to the absolute state of Protestantism in the US.
