Exposure to ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS, in utero, causes the ano-genital gap to SHRINK. In extreme cases the distance between the vaginal opening and the anus can be non existent (one external opening) in a newborn requiring reconstructive surgery.
While there are many endocrine disruptors the chief one linked to this birth defect is Bisphenol which WAS used to make soft plastics like baby bottle nipples, shower curtians, and soft ("safe") plastic toys.
